Kingston Cats

"KINGSTON CATS"

^^

My name is Cheryl, I live in Ontario, Canada. Recently I watched the television program "Weird Homes." This particular episode featured a Kingston, ON couple, Jack & Donna Wright, who are owners of over 300 cats...by choice. In July 2001 The Ottawa Citizen newspaper featured an article entitled "Crazy About Cats." Here are some excerpts from that article (copyright The Ottawa CitizenŠ).

The Kingston couple's home is a virtual cat menagerie, with over 300 felines of every stripe occupying their residence. The couple has lived with, and taken care of, hundreds of cats for more than 30 years and there are no plans to slow down. But a little outside assistance with cat upkeep would go a long way.

Last year Jack was financially strapped because all the rain did not help his painting business. Since January he's been trying to raise funds to get caught up and keep the cat shelter going; he almost lost the shelter and had to borrow about $13,000 to keep the cats alive.

Donna, who has six ruptured vertebrae, can't live in their home anymore. Her daily care of cats and a former waitressing job aggravated her back and on doctor's orders she's moved out. She's rented a home nearby and visits daily for several hours to prepare food and provide care for the cats.

Tourists from around the world have heard about their hundreds of cats and often visit their home.

Jack estimates it costs about $160 a day for food and litter, $200 a week for cleaning supplies (the house is scoured and disinfected daily), while medication amounts to $800 a month.

Jack took in his first cat, a black longhair called Midnight, back in 1969 and says he can't turn his back on his feline friends. The cats have given him and his wife so much love and pleasure over the years they'll continue until it's physically impossible.

I have created this website of my own volition. Neither Jack nor Donna know that it exists. The reason I have launched this site is simple: I am a cat lover ('owned' by four males myself!) who fully supports what Jack & Donna are doing, and I wish to let the world know of two very responsible and very kind hearted people.

The Kingston mail carriers know the Cat People; Jack & Donna recieve mail addressed to them simply as follows:

Jack & Donna Wright

Cat People - House #94 - Cat Crossing

Kingston, ON Canada

Jack & Donna don't believe animals were put on this Earth to be euthanized or abused.

Neither Jack nor Donna have ever asked for money; their words are "a little outside assistance with cat upkeep would go a long way."

The Wright's care for these cats out of the goodness of their hearts. My friend (Joan, also a cat lover with three of her own) and I hope to make it to Kingston to visit them and their many cats. It certainly will be an experience that we are not only looking forward to, but also one we will never forget!

Jack & Donna Wright's Kingston household is home to 361 cats, not including some 30 odd kittens. Mrs. Wright cuddles with Cleo and Mr. Wright holds Baby Baby. The couple has taken care of hundreds of cats for more than 30 years, including 'Billy Boy' (photo below) who is more than 20 years old and affectionately known as
"Old Bill."
